2008, Autoimmunity ReviewsCitation Excerpt :In the NOD.H2h4 mouse model we previously showed by immunohistochemistry that ICAM-1 was expressed constitutively in the thyroid gland at a high level even at the young age of 3–4 weeks prior to cellular infiltration and was further upregulated after excess iodine ingestion [32]. Several similar studies, in humans, have also reported an enhanced ICAM-1 expression in the thyroid glands of Graves' disease patients and, most significantly, in the thyrocytes of patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis [33–35]. However, no studies were performed in humans that indicate whether ICAM-1 expression increased prior to cellular infiltration.
