Despite the early description of the anatomy of the adrenal glands by Eustachio55 in 1563, the function and diseases of the “glandulae renis incumbentes” remained unknown until Addison's report of three patients with anemia and adrenal disease in the mid 1800s.24, 55 Adrenal tumors were recognized and studied by the end of the nineteenth century.24 The rarity of adrenal cancer increased the difficulty of treating this disease and remains the main reason for the lack of significant advances in its treatment despite other improvements in molecular understanding and clinical detection.
