2022, Developmental CellCitation Excerpt :Once they reach their target tissue, NC cells differentiate into a subset of specialized cells, including the connective tissue that forms the jaw and other facial structures, heart outflow tract, dorsal root ganglia, and melanocytes, among others (Szabó and Mayor, 2018). Defects in NC formation, migration, or differentiation lead to craniofacial defects and several other developmental diseases collectively termed neurocristopathies (Bolande, 1974). In recent years, the effect of mechanical forces on NC development has begun to be unraveled.
