2022, GeneCitation Excerpt :DNA methylation is an important mechanism of epigenetic control that is found in vertebrates, whereas little or no DNA methylation is found in yeast (Proffitt et al, 1984). It can suppress gene expression by reducing the affinity of transcription factors for DNA and/or by recruiting repressor proteins that recognise methylated DNA specifically (Tate and Bird, 1993; Choy et al, 2010). Methylation occurs predominantly on CpG dinucleotides and is associated with condensed nuclease-resistant heterochromatin (Razin and Cedar, 1977; Clark et al, 1995).
