2020, Journal of NeuroimmunologyCitation Excerpt :There is increasing attention towards understanding cytokines as common mediators of an altered central nervous system, particularly during inflammatory states induced by bacteria and viral infections. The cytokines produced in the brain can arise from several cell sources, including microglia, invading inflammatory cells, micro vessel endothelial cells, pericytes, choroid plexus, astrocytes, etc. (Sebire et al., 1993; Van Dam et al., 1995; Riazi et al., 2008). In the case of TGF-β, its levels are augmented in diverse pathologies, such as traumatic brain injury, epileptic seizures and ischaemia, multiple sclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's (Kadhim et al., 2008; Centonze et al., 2010; Denes et al., 2010).

2019, Neuroscience LettersCitation Excerpt :IL-1β is a pro-nociceptive inflammatory cytokine. Within the central nervous system, IL-1β is mainly produced by microglial cells [33]. IL-1β has potent hyperalgesic effects when given both peripherally and centrally [34–37].
