In addition, age-related thymic involution is associated with decreased lymphocyte differentiation, and defects in the stromal cell niche (Ortman et al., 2002; Gui et al., 2007), including thymic epithelial cells, which are responsible for the production of several hormones, growth factors and cytokines that regulate thymocyte maturation and survival (Boyd et al., 1993; de Mello-Coelho et al., 1998; Taub et al., 2010). Growth hormone (GH) has been considered as a treatment to counteract many age-related degenerative processes (Hartman et al., 2013) and as a potential immunoregulator.
