Melatonin, a neurohormone produced by the pineal gland, has been shown to decrease sleep initiation difficulties and nighttime activity in older adults (Garfinkel et al., 1997; MacFarlane et al., 1991). In a recent study of 40 PD patients with disturbed sleep, administration of 5 mg or 50 mg of melatonin daily for two weeks, resulted in similar improvements in subjective sleep disturbance, sleep quality and daytime sleepiness (Dowling et al., 2005).

Reduced endogenous melatonin production seems to be a prerequisite for effective exogenous melatonin treatment of sleep disorders.
