Diagnostic criteria for type 1 neurofibromatosis. Two or more of the following criteria are required for diagnosis

| Two or more neurofibromas |
| One plexiform neurofibroma |
| Freckling in the axilla or groins |
| Optic glioma |
| Two or more Lisch nodules |
| Presence of a distinct osseous lesion, eg sphenoid wing dysplasia or thinning of a long bone cortex with or without pseudoarthrosis |
| A first degree relative who meets the above criteria for NF1 |
