Structural proteins: Crystallins of the mammalian eye lens
2021, Encyclopedia of Biological Chemistry: Third EditionGreen tea flavanols protect human γB-crystallin from oxidative photodamage
2017, BiochimieCitation Excerpt :It has been reported that such protein precipitation and subsequent aggregation could be due to the misfolding of crystallins, induced either by age-related post-translational modifications (for age related cataracts) or mutations of human crystallin genes (for juvenile-onset cataracts) [11]. In the diseased human ocular lens, mRNAs of γ-A, γ-B, γ-C, and γ-D have been identified [12]. For age related cataract, protein misfolding occurs by several mechanisms.
Hereditary pediatric cataract on the Arabian Peninsula
2012, Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyCitation Excerpt :The major differences are that γ-crystallins are monomeric and lack terminal extensions. Of the γ-crystallins, only CRYGC and CRYGD are significantly expressed in the human lens.10 A specific founder dominant mutation in CRYGD (p.P23T) was documented as the cause for a unique phenotype of juvenile cerulean cataract in Saudi children from 2 different families (Fig. 4).11
Genetics of crystallins: Cataract and beyond
2009, Experimental Eye ResearchCitation Excerpt :The non-translated 3′-end is short (about 40 bp). The Cryge and Crygf genes, which are very strongly expressed in rodents during the late phase of gestation and in the juvenile phase, are not expressed in humans and, therefore, referred to as pseudogenes (Brakenhoff et al., 1990). In the mouse, alternative splicing has to be considered only for the Cryge gene (ENSEMBL database).
