2022, Topics in Companion Animal MedicineCitation Excerpt :Most canine genes are orthologous of human genes, that is, they are genes that have the same evolutionary origin and maintain the same function in both species but are distributed differently in chromosomes.11,12 Therefore, the difference between the chromosome numbers of the 2 species only reflects the chromosomal rearrangements throughout evolution,199-202 and since the gene homology is high, it is expected that most human monogenic diseases, such as IEM, also occur in dogs. Most of the IEM have an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern (Table 1).
