2008, Schizophrenia ResearchCitation Excerpt :This transposition was estimated at between 2 and 3 million by Schwartz et al. (1998) but re-dated at 6 MYA by Williams et al. (2006). Subsequent to the duplication (but the date is unclear) a paracentric inversion split the block on the Y (Sargent et al., 1996, 2002; Mumm et al., 1997), and the mechanism by which this occurred (LINE-LINE recombination) has been determined (Schwartz et al., 1998). If schizophrenia indeed is Homo sapiens-specific this 3.5 megabases of DNA region is of particular interest — “if we were able to identify those regions of DNA which distinguish man from the chimpanzee and gorilla, we might assume that it is in this segment of the genome that the psychosis gene is to be found” (Crow, 1988a).
